Accomplishments
Peter Demong has many accomplishments in his life and if asked he would say his biggest accomplishment is his family. Although, we could go on about Peter's many achievements this section of the website is dedicated entirely to what he accomplishes on your behalf at City Hall.
The following are what Peter has done so far on your behalf:
- Apr 18 2011 Notice of Motion 2011-10 - Secondary Suites in Undeveloped R-1 Districts - Initiated legalization of secondary suites in new, undeveloped areas of the City - and not in already developed R-1 districts - so people are aware of the rules prior to purchasing rather than having the City changing rules after citizens have purchased. Motion CARRIED
- Apr 18 2011 NM 2011-11 - Liaison for Wholly-Owned Subsidies - A motion to create an expert advisory Aldermanic employee position to assist Council in monitoring and working with subsidiary Corporations such as Enmax. This should help improve the level of communication and expertise to help Council make better decisions. Motion CARRIED
- Apr 18 2011 Inquiry Franchise Fee Methodology - Sent in a detailed Administrative Inquiry (requires written response) asking how this system works and why it is so much more than Edmonton is charging.
- Conducted Airport Tunnel constituent contact call - 1250 total vote count & 650 in favour.
- Conducted Secondary Suites constituent contact call - 651 adamantly opposed & 552 In favour if strict rules & regs could be put in place and enforced.
- Solar Powered Pedestrian Corridor Pilot Project - Instrumental in initiating a Solar Powered Pedestrian Corridor pilot project, and persuading Roads to put in $200,000 to pay for the units required for the solar panel lights @crosswalks test.
- Managed to get Zero Based reviews embedded in Council's plans.
- Managed to get the consolidation of the Calgary Business Tax embedded into Council's future plans.
- Helped embeded increased snow & ice control into City policies.
- Voted against first City budget because it did not reflect what Peter believed was a judicious use of taxpayer money.
- Voted repeatedly against keeping extra tax room that had been vacated by the Province, arguing that failure to do this was a de-facto tax increase that would not go through public approval or input processes.
- Fluoride - voted to remove from water because it is actually Provincial jurisdiction (Health). If they want it - they should pay for it.
- Ward14 Community Pancake Breakfast In response to difficulties expressed in selling Community Association (CA) annual memberships, the concept of selling them at a large community event where people were gathered anyway, inspired the initiation of the very first Ward14 annual Pancake Breakfast.
- Working diligently behind the scenes with the province to bridge @ 22X and Macleod Trail upgraded as well as pushing heavily for speeding up building the SW ring road.
- Sun Valley Blvd - Managed to get the Province to pay for a radar board and park sign over and above the crosswalk that was also installed to assist walking across this dangerous road.
- Sept 19 2011 Motion to add "where businesses can flourish" to an otherwise one-sided motion.
- Made successful motion to Council: For Council to direct Administration to bring forward appropriate wording with the intent to add a 12th policy goal for determining "societal benefits" to: "encourage a healthy, vibrant economy where businesses can flourish" and return Directly To Council on or before Feb 2012
